Depay Strikes twice as Manchester United edge close to next Champions league Phase

Memphis Depay made his United Champions League debut with a bang, scoring 2 goals and provided an assist as Manchester United came from behind to win their Belgian opponents Club Brugge 3-1 in Tuesday's Champions League first leg Play-off.

Manchester United are in a bid to make the group stages of the competition having missed out in the last season's edition. Club Brugge took an early lead thanks to a Micheal Carrick own goal, but United came back with 2 wonderful goals from Depay before half time.

Brandon Mechele a Club Brugge player was later sent off in the second half, but United waited until the dying minutes of the game to finish of their visitors, as substitute Marouane Fellaini headed in a cross from Depay, Louis van Gaal's side were truly the better side in tonight's game, but the game concludes in Bruges next week.

"It (Fellaini's goal) makes a difference because 2-1 is a very difficult result," said United manager Van Gaal.

"I am very happy for Memphis because a player needs that. I said it was a matter of time and hopefully he shall continue."

Depay told BT Sport: "It is a nice feeling to score two goals at Old Trafford. We have to travel to Bruges and finish the job."

For the past 504 days, Old Trafford has never been part of a Champions League game and tonight was sensational as the Red Devils showed strong quality.

The Visitors fans were the first to explode in happiness after the took the lead just eight minutes into the game from a Carrick own goal.

Victor Vazquez's free kick from the left side of the visitors took a deflection off Adnan Januzaj and while attempting to clear the ball, Carrick put past Sergio Romero from 16 yards.

It was the first goal scored against United this campaign but the new no7 replied quickly ending the visitors happy mood.

Depay collected a nice pass from Carrick, chested it, flicked it over an opponent's head, tiptoed a bit and sent the ball into the bottom right corner of the post.

The theatre of dreams was filled with cacophonous noise from the fans.

United went on to score two more wonderful goals, one from Depay and another from Fellaini after coming in for Januzaj.

Memphis Depay could have made it 4 and thus scoring a Hat-rick but he raised the ball high.

Memphis Depay have given an indication that he is capable of fitting in the no7 jersey that have been worn by former United Legends like George Best, Eric Cantona, Davids Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

United took advantage of the Red card given to Mechele in the 80th minute after a second yellow was given to him for a foul on Hernandez, and it paid for as Fellaini headed home a 94th minute goal.

"This last goal was very bad for the confidence," said visiting coach Michel Preud'homme. "It's a pity we let that one in."
