Manchester United return with an improved £42.5m bid for Sergio Ramos

Having failed with their first bid, Manchester United have returned with a new and improved bid for Sergio Ramos today, according to The Telegraph.

United saw a £32m bid rejected by the Spanish giants last Thursday, and Ed Woodward and co have really stepped up the ante with second bid.

The Telegraph claim that this fresh bid is in the region of £42.5m, an astronomical fee for a central defender, albeit one who can also play in midfield.

Ramos of course does have a 200m euro buyout clause, but this clause is more of a deterrent than anything else, as Real would undoubtedly accept less than half that for the 29 year old.

In an intriguing tug-of-war which also involves David De Gea, Ramos’ intentions remain unclear; there are conflicting reports as to his desire to stay or go.

On the one hand, it’s been reported that he’s fallen out with Madrid president Florentino Perez, and that he feels undervalued by the club hierarchy.

On the other hand, there is skepticism as to whether Ramos is really interested in United, with the possibility that he’s simply using them in order to engineer a better deal for himself at the Bernabeu.
