Sunderland have completed the signing of coates from Liverpool

Liverpool have reached an agreement with Sunderland to sell Sebastian Coates for 4m pounds, The Liverpool Echo report, ahead of the official announcement and contract signing next week.

The Uruguayan defender spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light, and despite only actually making 10 Premier League appearances for the Black Cats, he impressed enough to secure a long-term deal.

Coates never really managed to convince Reds boss Brendan Rodgers, and having suffered a knee injury in his second season, he was reduced to the margins, before being loaned back to Uruguayan club Nacional.

Coates only actually made 12 league appearances for Liverpool, which was essentially non-descript apart from that one incredible moment, in which he scored a sensational scissors kick away at QPR – his one and only goal in the red shirt. (pictured above).

Still just 24 (his 6’5 physique perhaps gave the impression that he was older on arrival at Liverpool), the Uruguayan still has plenty of time to establish himself as a Premier League player.
