Reina joins Napoli from Bayern

The Bavarians have revealed the goalkeeper wants to play regular football for the Serie A side, who have confirmed a deal has been done to bring him back to the Stadio San Paolo

Bayern Munich have confirmed that goalkeeper Pepe Reina has been released from his contract, allowing him to sign for Napoli on a free transfer.

The Spaniard joined the Bavarians last summer on a three-year deal having seen out his contract at Liverpool, but was restricted to just three appearances in all competitions in 2014-15.

As a result, the goalkeeper has been strongly linked with - whom he had spent a year on loan prior to linking up with Pep Guardiola's Bundesliga champions - and Bayern confirmed the deal for him to join the Serie A side was a reality.

"Pepe Reina has asked us to release him from his contract because he wants to sign for Napoli where he will have the chance to play as a goalkeeper on a regular basis," Bayern deputy chairman Jan-Christian Dreesen told the club's website on Tuesday.

"Reina has fitted into our team in sporting - and above all human - terms so we more than happy to comply with his request. We wish Pepe and his family all the best for the future."

Minutes later, Napoli echoed that an agreement had been secured with Reina and welcomed the 32-year-old to the club after he completed the medical club president Aurelio De Laurentiis had revealed was going ahead.

"Pepe Reina is a Napoli player," the club's website stated. "The goalkeeper had his medical on Tuesday morning accompanied by team doctor Dr. De Nicola and then signed with President De Laurentiis the contract in blue."
