Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that he will not be returning to AC Milan as he needs to take a break from management.
The former Chelsea boss held talks with Milan last week and vice-president Adriano Galliani said it was ’50-50’ whether he would be back for a second spell at the San Siro.
Ancelotti had previously said he would take a year off after leaving Real Madrid at the end of the season.
And on Tuesday evening he revealed that he has taken the tough decision to turn down Milan, who he coached from 2001 to 2009.
“Thanks to @acmilan for their support (and) interest,” he tweeted. “It was hard to say no to such a beloved club to me but I need some rest. I wish them the best.”
Milan also released a statement on their website, saying: "Carlo Ancelotti has informed Milan that he will not be able to become the coach of the Rossonera first-team squad for next season."
Ancelotti won the Serie A title with Milan in 2004 and lifted the Champions League in 2003 and 2007.
He said last week he has had plenty of offers since leaving Madrid, but needs to take a break.
"I must have a back operation because of spinal stenosis that for some time creates a tingle in my hands," he told Italian newspaper Il Giornale.
"I don't know how long the period of recovery will be. But I can assure you that I've had plenty of (job) offers from Italy, England, Germany."
