Manchester united forward wayne Rooney now Britain's second richestsportsman

The Manchester United and England striker has a wealth of £72 million and only sits behind Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, who has a personal fortune of £88m

Wayne Rooney has been named Britain’s second richest sportsman behind Lewis Hamilton.

The Manchester United striker has amassed a wealth of £72 million, according to the Telegraph, and thus sits only behind the Formula One world champion in terms of the wealthiest British sports stars, with Hamilton worth £88m.

The list, released on Saturday, features six other football figures, with QPR defender Rio Ferdinand fifth on the list, with a personal fortune of £44m.

Steven Gerrard and Jose Mourinho also feature, with riches of £42m and £40m respectively, while Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard’s wealth of £39m earns him a spot on the rankings.

Ryan Giggs and Arsene Wenger round off the football-related rankings, with the two both boasting a wealth of £38m.

Golfers Rory McIlroy and Sir Nick Faldo, basketball player Luol Deng, tennis star Andy Murray and Hamilton’s F1 rival Jenson Button round off the list.
